Sometimes you really don't want to know...

When a French woman asks the elderly Reverend H.S. Watchman for directions outside a Phoenix grocery store, he instantly falls in love with her youth and beauty. He sees Dominique as a lost soul, and maybe, through helping her, he can forget about the aches and pains of aging.

But as he seeks to grasp this taste of youth, will he lose something important?

A short story by K. S. R. Burns, best-selling author of The Paris Effect.

Interview with the Author

Why did you write The Paris Effect?

This is easy. I am a member of two book groups. We love talking about stories and characters, why we liked or didn't like a novel, what books and reading mean to us. I've done a lot of pondering about what makes a satisfying reading experience. Simply put, I wanted to write a novel that my book groups would enjoy reading and talking about.

What kind of story is it?

Reviewers call it an engrossing adventure that's both funny and touching. Literary types would probably say it's a coming of age story because the main character, Amy (who loves all things French, and is diet-obsessed and believes French women don't get fat), takes the first big risk of her life by running away to France, soon learning the truth of the expression, "Wherever you go, there you are." I call it a tale of self-discovery that for the reader doubles as a virtual mini-vacation to Paris, giving a unique glimpse of Paris life.

You also wrote Paris Ever After, a standalone sequel to The Paris Effect. So I don’t need to read The Paris Effect first?

Correct! Each book can be enjoyed on its own, but like a café crème and macaron, they go great together. Both stories take you on a journey through Amy’s Paris, which is a Paris few casual tourists ever see. But each story has its own path—a surprising, often unpredictable path of self-discovery as Amy struggles to confront the challenges being thrown at her.

Many books have been written with Paris as the setting. What sets yours apart?

Who doesn't like a Paris love story? For many of us, Paris is the ultimate romantic dream destination. And don't get me wrong—Paris is truly as romantic as it's cracked up to be! But it's also a multilingual, multinational metropolis of street hustlers, diesel fumes, and pickpockets. Amy encounters all of these and more, including some wonderfully kind strangers. She gets to know a Paris that few casual tourists ever see. And so will you. Thanks for reading!

The best short stories deliver characters that are multidimensional, evoke our fears, and remind us of our humanity--No small feat to accomplish in just a few thousand words. We are treated to just such a delightful complication of character in the character of Reverend Watchman.
Highly recommend!

Nice unsuspecting build-up to sudden trepidation that people are not as they seem.
This thought-provoking short story will leave you thinking long afterward! Without spoiling the unexpected ending, I'll just say that you will understand why Watchman fell in love with Dominique, and you'll wonder what you would have done if you were him...
This short story drew me in right from the beginning. There is tons of imagery in these few words, and I felt like I was there. I could understand the choices the main character made, even while thinking noooo! Don't do it! The story stayed with me after I was done.
The author seemingly effortlessly puts the reader inside the mind and body of an 84-year-old retired minister. The cell phone with the large buttons his daughter bought for him is at home charging while he's at the grocery store and meets a young woman who needs help. The reader starts to see where the story is going, but there's a satisfying ending that you might not expect.
You Don’t Want to Know is a captivating read. When a petite pretty woman asked Watchman, a retired minister, for help, the Reverend felt as if he was back in his element. Although Watchman was elderly and stayed at home most of the time, he didn’t consider himself to be lonely, per se. But, when his services were needed to comfort a young woman in distress, it was like turning back the clock for him. Watchman knew better than to put himself in a precarious position, but having a delicate woman by his side was just too enticing, to resist. Unfortunately for Watchman, this decision would cost him.

This is an entertaining and well-written short story.

I received this complimentary short story from the author.
KSR Burns is quickly becoming one of my favorite writers.
I read Paris Ever After and thoroughly enjoyed that. Then I signed up for emails and got a copy of You Don't Want to Know. I am amazed how she is able to develop the characters in such a brief story. I enjoy how descriptive and intelligent the writing is.
I now want to go back and read The Paris Effect.
KSR Burns has a way of hooking me from the very beginning of the story and then I don't want to put it down.
Waiting for some new works to read!
A quick, clever and poignant story, about life as it too often is, about victims and evildoers, and the good guy not always winning in the end.
